Bihar IPL team demand grows as CM, Sports Minister back proposal after Sooryavanshi rise: ‘Working in mission mode’

The demand for a separate Indian Premier League (IPL) team from Bihar is growing stronger after Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh publicly supported the proposal on Friday.

The discussion started after businessman Anil Agarwal questioned why Bihar still does not have an IPL franchise despite producing several talented cricketers who have represented India and impressed in domestic cricket.

In a post on X, Agarwal mentioned players like Ishan Kishan, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sakib Hussain, all of whom were born in Bihar and are performing well in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. He said Bihar deserves its own IPL team just like franchises such as Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary quickly reacted to the post and supported the idea. He said the Bihar government is already working in “mission mode” with a clear vision to improve cricket infrastructure and support young talent in the state.

“I completely agree with you. For the cricket emotion of Bihar, the government is working in mission mode with a clear vision. With your cooperation, a positive decision will certainly be taken regarding the Bihar cricket team,” Choudhary wrote.

Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh also welcomed the proposal and said Bihar’s sports lovers deserve a strong cricket team and a proper platform for local players.

“Everyone wishes that when every state has a team, why shouldn’t Bihar have one too? We all want Bihar’s players to get a proper platform and a rightful place where they can perform well and proudly raise Bihar’s name,” she said.

The IPL expanded to 10 teams with two new franchises only a few years ago, and a new team right now is highly unlikely. However, the recent rise of players like Sooryavanshi, Kishan, and Sakib has strengthened calls for Bihar’s representation in IPL.
